This is Maria Martins' barrucha.
I made it out of brazilian glazed tiles bought in shops specialized in
used tiles, and out of scrap wood found on the streets of Sao Paulo.
Inside the barrucha there is the butt of Maria Martins made of brazilian Ponto coffee beans.
Martins, herself a good sculptor,is said to have been the muse for Duchamp's last installation,
Etant Donnes. That was the only link I found between Brazil and Marcel! Inside the
Barrucha there is also a skull made of plaster painted in the primary colours, a red light and a cluster
of stone grapes!
This is the sculpture-installation Marcel Duchamp dans la douche, made in 1991, with an imaginary
Marcel standing on the killing floor wearing bathing-shoes and a bathing-cap, looking at sexual
forms all over the world through binoculars.
Both works are placed so that Marcel is looking straight into the barrucha.
Between them there is an opera score, made on a faximile of Marcels' instructions for
Etant Donnes. It gives important clues for how to "play" the
sculpture.
