Apple eating performance with Shawn Deckerin (USA)
N.A.M.E. gallery, Chicago 1996. Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki. 1997

The collaborated performance between sound artist Shawn Decker (Chicago) and Andersson was based on the sounds from eating. After a thorough research in different food stuff, they found out that the apple is “the ultimate sound machine”. By eating an apple in different ways, it is possible to make an incredible amount of different sounds.
A ten minute miniature concerto in honour of the apple was made. Decker made a background tape by recording the sounds of Andersson eating an apple, which he transformed and changed on the computer. In the performance Andersson ate an apple, Decker recorded it live and changed the sounds on a computer and combined them with the background tape. The space was surrounded by speakers to create an illusion that the audience was sitting inside Andersson’s mouth.
In the version made for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki a special microfone was used, which traced the eating sounds inside the digestive channel.
