The Kissing Bridge (Turku)

Wäinö Aaltonen Art Museum, Turku 20.11.2003-11.1.2004. As a part of Andersson’s The Core of Christmas exhibition.

The Kissing Bridge, 2001-2003.

The media installation is a part of a series of works by Andersson aimed at spreading the feeling of “love is all around you” into a world.

Visitors could walk over the lip shaped bridge, covered with light bulbs; taking the shapes of a red heart, a yellow candlelight and a blue tear. On the center of the bridge you stop and push the button at the same time as you kiss or hug your partner (or just send a smile to the world if you are there by yourself).

The picture of the kiss, taken by a web cam, was sent in real time to the Bridge’s web site. The picture was updated when the next pair kissed and pushed the button. On the same web site you could also see another screen with a picture of the whole bridge installation, which was updated every 10th second.

By the bridge there were two computers, from which visitors could find their own kiss and e-mail it to himself or herself or to a friend.

Apple concert 2003 (with Shawn Decker), The Heart Shaped House 1999-2003.

Andersson was invited to make the annual christmas exhibition in the Wäinö Aaltonen museum (Turku City Art Museum). He chose to exhibit two installations not previously shown in Turku, The Heartshaped House and The Kissing Bridge. Both works deal with the message of Christmas; love, giving, taking care, longing, communication, light and darkness. The third installation was a made for this exhibition together with sound artist Shawn Decker (Chicago), who has collaborated with Andersson in several previous projects. Apple concert is a video-sound installation in honur of the apple, which, along with being a mythical fruit, also is the ultimate sound machine!
